The Guadalquivir flows through Andalucia, the beating heart of Iberian history. In the 8th century, the Moors settled in the area and gave the river the Arabic name wadi al kabir, or great river.

The river acted as a means of trade and culture over many centuries, allowing great cities to flourish in Andalucia. It originated in the mountains of the Jaen province and empties into the Gulf of Cadiz, passing through many cities that made up Spanish history, including those that were the homelands of Roman emperors and others that were the pinnacle of Al Andalus.
